Looking for an Alacrity Boat for sale?

Get some help with our tips for finding a quality Alacrity Boat bargain

The Alacrity is a popular bilge keeler, 18'6" in length, originally designed by Peter Stephenson and produced by Hurley Marine for Russell Marine Ltd., and after 1972 produced by Russell Marine themselves. Over 1000 were made in total. They are often referred to as an Alacrity 19, or occasionally as an Alacrity 18, and it is a design that has stood the test of time with many boats still delivering safe and stable service. The cabin offers accommodation for three adults in individual berths, although many have seen modifications to their original layout according to the needs of their owners. While the hull and topsides are of GRP construction, the interior structures are normally made from plywood which has a tendency to rot in boats suffering from water ingress (leaking windows etc). Consequently many 'renovation' project commence with the near complete gutting of the interior and rebuilding of floors, bunks, shelves etc. As with any type of DIY project, some of these rebuilds will have been undertaken with meticulous care and commitment whilst others may bear testament to a previous owner with more optimism than woodworking skills.

When it comes to the value of an Alacrity, like any small and old boat, the figure can be anything from zero upwards. A damaged hull with no mast or sails, but a lot of internal rot, would most probably cost more in materials to restore than the boat would ever be worth, before even thinking of the many hours of labour. Good quality examples, ready to go out on the water, can often be found around the £1000-1500 mark and a figure around half that would allow the buyer to still find a decent boat that only needed some cosmetic attention and minor work.

It's all too easy to get carried away when making an offer on a private sale or bidding in an auction, especially when you haven't researched or viewed an item, so here's a few things to bear in mind when looking for your next boat or other marine item. Do your homework, compare prices, think through the logistics, be patient and don't make rashly impulsive decisions and you'll be able to pick up some excellent deals online.
